Sharpies is Beaufort’s newest fine dining restaurant and
bar, located on the historic waterfront. The restaurant
features certified black angus beef, fresh local
seafood, and house-made pastas. Dressings and
sauces are all made in house, of fresh ingredients.
Sharpies also creates all desserts on site, including
sorbets, gelatos, crème caramels, pies and cakes.
Sharpies’ signature
dish is the three-tiered seafood delicacy known as
Fruits-de-Mer, consisting of poached lobster tails, raw
oysters, chilled clams and freshly steamed prawns.
The dish includes three sauces to enjoy with the seafood
selections. It’s sized to serve four as an
appetizer or two as an entrée. You’ll find it
perfect with a chilled sauvignon blanc or chardonnay.
Sharpies' Bar holds all ABC
permits and offers a wide selection of martinis and
specialty drinks. Be sure to try the SharpShooter,
a fresh, plump oyster served in a shot glass with
chilled Grey Goose Vodka and accompanied by a tray of
condiments. The wine list consists of over 75
wines selected from small wineries that specialize in
high quality varieties in small batches.
Therefore, the wine listed is updated frequently with
new vintages and new selections.
Sharpies came to Beaufort after George Ives moved here
from Connecticut in 1874 to set up an oyster business
and decided to use the type of boat he knew from Long
Island Sound. After his New Haven sharpie trounced local
boats in a race from Harkers Island to Beaufort Inlet in
1876, area watermen eagerly took to the type, which soon
came to dominate North Carolina waters from Pamlico
Sound southward.
It wasn’t just their
speed that made sharpies so attractive. They were
economical to build and operate. They could carry large
loads yet still operate in the shallow waters of the
sounds and creeks. Eastern North Carolina’s enthusiasm
for sharpies surpassed that of their native Long Island
Sound as local builders created larger, more powerful
vessels that could fulfill almost every transportation
need in the region. When internal combustion engines
arrived on the scene in the early 1900s, ingenious
builders modified the sharpie form to create elegant
Core Sounders, the direct ancestors of today’s luxurious
sport fishermen from Down East
Carteret County. |

Sharpies is the brainchild of Joyce and Larry Gross and
is their first restaurant venture. They have
traveled extensively in the U.S. and Europe, always
exploring restaurants and critiquing food and
service. They included all of the things that made their
restaurant visits special and memorable (and tried to
avoid the uh-oh’s!). The restaurant is dedicated
to delicious food, impeccable service, and warm
hospitality—all offered in a beautiful setting.
From the china and the crystal to the tea cozies and
brandy warmers, Sharpies tries to think of everything to
make your dining experience a delightful one.
